History of Chiefs of Police
From 1871 until 1911, Chiefs of Police were appointed by the Municipal Council. In 1911, a new by-law was enacted and a Board of Commissioners of Police was formed. The Board would appoint the Chiefs of Police until 1990. The Police Services Act was introduced that year, and since then the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Board has been responsible for choosing the leader of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.
