Fingerprints

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service currently provides fingerprint services for Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) and Broad Record Check (BRC) applicants who have received notification from our Service the extra fingerprint step is required.

Fingerprint Fee: $38.00 (includes HST) to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service AND a $25.00 fee payable to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Processing times for certified criminal record checks for civil purposes (also known as fingerprint-based criminal record checks) include the following standard processing times by the RCMP:

  • 3 business days if there is no match to criminal record information.
  • 3 to 120 business days if there is a possible match to criminal record information.
  • Further delays may occur, when there is a possible match requiring a manual review to ensure that the information is accurate and up-to-date.
  • The results are mailed to the address provided and extra time should be allowed for delivery by Canada Post.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service cannot expedite this process.

Under the Criminal Records Act, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service may destroy fingerprints and photographs retained in its files upon request.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) will accept requests for the destruction of fingerprints and photographs from our Records Management System under the following criteria:

  • You have no criminal convictions; and
  • You are at least 18 years of age; and
  • You do not currently have any outstanding charges before the Courts; and
  • You are not wanted by any Police Service.

The related charges must have originated from a SSMPS occurrence to have this destruction request processed.  If the charges originated from another Police Service, you must contact that Police Service.

If you have a criminal conviction, you must apply for a record suspension to have convictions removed from your record: Record Suspensions – Canada.ca

Written Request: Individuals wishing to request information under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act must do so by submitting a written Request Form.  All requests must include the requestor’s name, full address, date of birth, and telephone number.  Identify the specific record(s) requested or provide sufficient details to enable your record to be identified.

A $5.00 application fee (cash, certified cheque, or money order) must accompany all requests.

The processing of this request will not begin until this fee has been received.  In addition to the application fee, there is a legislated fee schedule for the processing of access requests, which includes photocopying, searching, and preparing records.

Note: Information that is available through the report request procedures is not subject to the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.  Please see the Service’s Fee Schedule for these costs.

Access and Privacy Section for Access / Correction

General records:  all records are subject to access requests, except records to which mandatory and discretionary exemptions apply under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. In addition to the application fee, there is a legislated fee schedule for the processing of access requests for general records (other computer-related fees may also apply).

Personal information records:  information relating to the requestor themselves is referred to as personal information.  Similar to general records, mandatory and discretionary exemptions may apply.

Identification must be provided in order for the release of personal information.  A charge ($.20 per photocopy) as well as other computer-related fees may apply.

Privacy

The Act has privacy protection provisions concerning the collection, use, disclosure, retention, and disposal of personal information.  Access to another individual’s personal information may be restricted without consent from that person. If you are requesting information on behalf of someone else, or wish to obtain information about another person, you must supply the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service with signed authorization from that individual.

How to make an access/correction request:

  • Make your request in person to the F.O.I/R.O.I. Office.
  • Fill out the form provided as legibly as possible.
  • Pay the NON-WAIVABLE $5.00 fee.  (Cash, certified cheque, or money order accepted.)

PLEASE NOTE: IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ACT, REQUESTS UNDER THE ACCESS AND PRIVACY SECTION MAY TAKE UP TO 30 DAYS TO PROCESS AND COMPLY UPON RECEIPT OF YOUR REQUEST.

Complainants requiring a synopsis of a General Occurrence Report (GOR) can apply by visiting Information Services to fill in a Report Request Form.  You must produce government issued photo identification.  See See Photo Identification Standards for further acceptable identification.

A Traffic Report is available to drivers, passengers, property owners, and vehicle owners involved.  The requester will be given a copy of the front portion of the traffic investigation report prepared at the time of the motor vehicle collision by a Traffic officer.  The report includes the names of all parties involved, insurance particulars, brief description of the accident, and a diagram.

This request can be made…

  • In person at the Traffic Services’ office [payable by cash, certified cheque (by Insurance company only), money order]; OR
  • By written request (letter – Attention: Traffic Services) enclosing the applicable fee.

Note: The form required for these reports is not available online. You must attend at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, 580 Second Line East, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

The Sault Ste Marie Police Service Board is responsible for the provision of adequate and effective police services in Sault Ste Marie and Prince Township which includes the Directory of General Records and Personal Information Banks.

The Board is comprised of five members who are appointed, three by Sault Ste Marie municipal council and two by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.

The personal information requested and provided here is collected under the authority of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (MFIPPA) Act, R.S.O. 1990, c.M.56, and will be used to validate information in support of a police investigation.
