2017-2019 Annual Report
Comparing Crime Statistics
Crime statistics in this report should not be compared to statistics from previous Annual Statistical Reports due to changes in counting rules.
It is also not recommended that the crime statistics in this report be compared to crime statistics prepared by other agencies due to the fact that different methods of categorization, geographic, technical data, and time constraints may affect the outcome.
Although comparing exact numbers is not recommended, the general trends and magnitude of change should be similar regardless of the counting method.
Detailed information pertaining to Statistics Canada crime reporting methodology can be found in the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey documents posted on Statistics Canada website.

Message from the Chair
Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Board

On behalf of the Police Services Board, I am pleased to present the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s 2017-2019 Annual Report.
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is an important community partner with a significant social responsibility. As a primary function, the service works to keep our community safe. In furtherance of this goal, the service will continue to work with partners across our community to acknowledge and address the underlining socioeconomic and mental health challenges that can lead to crime.
The Board is proud of the efforts of the Service to enhance community safety, advance public trust and accountability, and support members. We are committed to being a transparent Police Service, and the 2017-2019 Annual Report presents a clear and thorough statistical breakdown of the Service’s operations in Sault Ste. Marie and Prince Township.
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Board would like to thank Chief Stevenson and Deputy Chief MacLachlan, along with our sworn and civilian employees, for continuing to serve with integrity, professionalism, compassion, dedication and courage, in an embodiment of the service's motto: Committed to Excellence in our Community.
Message from the Chief
Chief Hugh Stevenson, ED.D.

On behalf of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, and under the direction of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Board, I am pleased to present the 2017-2019 Annual Report.
In 2019 we presented the 2019-2021 Strategic Plan, my first as Chief of Police, with the mandate of “Ensuring Public Safety Through Enforcement, Education and Partnerships.” While this report only addresses the first year of the Strategic Plan, it is transparent and gives an accurate depiction of the work we do to keep Sault Ste. Marie and Prince Township safe.
We realize ensuring public safety is not something we can accomplish alone. We actively analyze our statistics in order to develop the most effective way to enhance community safety for all. We understand the importance of transparency, and presenting this data gives perspective of what we do on a daily basis.
The 2017-2019 Annual Report will hold our Service accountable to the people we serve and will serve as a reminder to our sworn and civilian members that we remain committed to excellence in policing as we work toward improving the quality of life for our friends, families and neighbours.
Mission
To protect and enhance the quality of life in the City of Sault Ste. Marie and Prince Township through dynamic partnerships with community members and agencies.
