FAQs

Fitness Test Preparation Program

This is a suggested program, and the exercises herein are suggestions only. You can research different exercises that can also help you prepare.

You must determine for yourself the maximum level at which you can complete each exercise without overexerting yourself. Please be careful, go at your own pace, and stay within your abilities to prevent injury.

It is also recommended that you stretch all parts of your body before and after each workout to increase flexibility and avoid injury.

The results you get from this program depend on the effort you put into it. Completing this program does not automatically mean that you will pass the fitness test. It is your responsibility to make sure you are ready for the fitness test. The fitness testing is a maximal effort test, so prepare accordingly.

Applicants are required to complete the OACP Certificate Testing program. To prepare yourself for the required fitness testing, visit Police Fitness Personnel Ontario (PFPO) for explanation/demonstrations of each of the tests you will be required to perform.

Factors that may impact your ability to participate in the fitness test are elevated heart rate, blood pressure, and/or injury.
Please note that you will need to have engaged in physical activity that elevates your heart rate to at least 90% of your estimated maximum in the 30 days leading up to the fitness test in order to participate. If you don't, you will not be allowed to participate. This is for your safety as we need to be sure your heart can handle the stress of the test.
  • Examples of physical activity which could elevate your heart rate to this level include running/sprinting, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), competitive sports, etc.
  • Examples of your body's response to elevating your heart rate to this level include rapid breathing, strong/fast heartbeat, feelings of exhaustion, sweating, etc.

Yes, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will work with the candidate to accommodate their schedule. We would have the candidate attend Sault Ste. Marie and complete a fitness test. If successful, then the candidate would have an interview the same day.

Police officers must be in good health. Candidates must pass medical, vision and hearing standards. Applicants with concerns about their health should get advice from a medical professional before applying.

Ontario Police College Physical Assessment

Upon receiving a conditional offer after successfully passing all stages within Constable Selection Process, all cadets will be required to undergo rigorous training and assessments at the Ontario Police College. One of those assessments is the PREP physical component (Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police). All Cadets will be required to pass the PREP assessment once enrolled in the Basic Constable Training Program at the Ontario Police College.

Kindly note that the P.R.E.P assessment is made up of two components: the pursuit/restraint circuit and the 20 metre leger shuttle run. It is the responsibility of the cadet to ensure that they are adequately prepared prior to arriving to the Ontario Police College. It is with the utmost importance applicants start mentally and physically preparing for the PREP assessment at the beginning of the Constable Selection System.
