Interested in a Career in Policing? Sault Police are Hiring

Approved by: 259 - September 1, 2023

Are you interested in a career in policing? Now may be the right time to apply. The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is actively recruiting and hiring Constables, Special Constables, and Civilian staff from all walks of life.

“While many of our officers have an education related to policing or come from a law enforcement background, other life experiences are also an asset,” says Inspector Ben Bolduc, Corporate Development and Emergency Management.

“We’ve hired former teachers, pilots, social workers, construction workers, project managers, IT professionals, and beyond who all bring valuable perspectives, skills, and life experiences to our service.”

Many officers start their careers as Special Constables. Currently, duties in this role include courthouse and prisoner security, electronic fingerprinting, serving legal documents, and various other responsibilities. Sault Police anticipate this role to expand to prepare for future needs of the service.

Constables are responsible for preserving the peace in our community, preventing crimes, providing assistance to victims, and apprehending criminals. Recruits in this role must attend Ontario Police College once they are hired. Earlier this year, the Government of Ontario waived tuition fees for the Basic Constable Training program, saving recruits more than $15,000.

Those interested in supporting the police behind-the-scenes can apply for a Part-Time Civilian Relief Staff position. Duties include transcription, relieving 911 Communicators, and general clerical assignments.
