Driver Charged with Operation While Impaired After Crashing into Cemetery Entrance

Approved by: 1030 - May 23, 2024

On May 22, 2024, officers with Patrol Services charged 67-year-old Matthew Knight with operation while impaired, refusal to comply with a breath demand, dangerous operation, and failure to stop after an accident.

Around 6:00 p.m., 911 Communicators received a report of a single motor vehicle collision near the intersection of Peoples Road and Fourth Line. Officers were dispatched to the scene. An investigation revealed the accused had failed to stop at a stop sign while travelling at a high rate of speed – almost colliding with another motor vehicle – before crashing into a stone wall at the entrance of a cemetery, exiting the vehicle, and running into the woods.

Officers located the accused hiding in the woods and developed grounds to believe their ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by alcohol. They were arrested. Officers read the accused a demand for a breath sample, and they refused to provide one.

The accused is charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired – Alcohol and/or Drugs
  • Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand
  • Dangerous Operation
  • Failure to Stop After Accident

The accused was released on an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear in court on June 17, 2024.
