Crime Prevention Week – Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s CCTV Initiative is Live

Approved by: 235 - November 3, 2025

Effective November 3, 2025, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s Community Safety Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Camera initiative is active. Cameras are recording in strategic locations across the city to enhance public safety and deter criminal activity.

The initial 30 CCTV network cameras are placed near long-term care and retirement facilities, at key intersections, and in other locations identified through an evidence-based review of calls for service. This targeted approach is designed to improve community safety, particularly for vulnerable residents.

“Following a thorough review of this initiative over the past year, we are proud to move it forward,” said Chief Brent Duguay. “By leveraging technology, we can strengthen the efficiency of our investigations, particularly in missing persons cases. These cameras will deliver timely, critical insights that support positive outcomes when every second counts.”

In addition to the 30 cameras already deployed across the community, at least 15 additional cameras will be installed in strategic areas of the community in the coming months. The additional cameras will be placed in areas where officers frequently respond to calls for service.

The CCTV system will not be monitored in real time but will serve as an investigative tool. Access is strictly limited to designated personnel, ensuring officers can respond more effectively to calls for service and investigations while maintaining accountability. Signage has been installed to inform the public where cameras are in place.

The initiative complies with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA). A Privacy Impact Assessment has been submitted to the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, and strict protocols are in place to secure all data and prevent unauthorized access.

In addition to crime prevention, the CCTV system will support Patrol Services, Traffic Services, and Investigation Services. This technology represents an important step toward creating a safer environment for everyone who lives in, works in, and visits Sault Ste. Marie.
