Drug Charges Laid in November 15 Incident
On November 21, 2024, detectives with the Drug Enforcement Unit charged 26-year-old Nicholas Berto with three counts of possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking in relation to a firearms incident which had occurred on November 15, 2024.
On November 15, 2024, detectives executed a search warrant at the accused’s residence after responding to a report of the accused being in possession of firearms. A search of the accused’s trailer located a loaded handgun and a shotgun. The accused was arrested, and 14 charges were laid in relation to the firearms and ammunition found. They were remanded into custody at the Algoma Treatment and Remand Centre (ATRC).
When officers observed a larch quantity of illegal drugs during their search for firearms, they stopped searching and applied for a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant.
Once obtained, detectives with the Drug Enforcement Unit executed the warrant on November 16, 2024. Detectives located approximately 27 grams of suspected methamphetamine, approximately 57 grams of suspected cocaine, approximately 191 grams of suspected fentanyl, rifle ammunition, drug packaging material, a cutting agent, and a money counter. The total estimated street value of drugs seized is approximately $37,245.
On November 21, 2024, detectives attended the ATRC and rearrested the accused on the following charges:
- Possession of Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking x3
The accused continues to be held in custody at the ATRC.
