Uniform Recruitment
The Uniform Recruitment division is responsible for recruiting, interviewing, and conducting background investigations for everyone who applies to become a sworn officer of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. This includes Experienced Officers, Recruit Constables, Special Constables, and Auxiliary Members. Uniform Recruitment is supported by Human Resources, which includes the part-time Background Investigators/Recruiters.
Uniform Recruitment is proactively looking for professional and motivated individuals who are eager to join our team as an Experienced Officer, Recruit Constable, Special Constable or an Auxiliary Member.
Uniform Recruitment works alongside Human Resources to review all applications to ensure applicants meet the criteria necessary to become a sworn officer with our Service. Uniform Recruitment conducts interviews with applicants, completes background investigations and liaises with psychologists and medical doctors to ensure the application process is efficient and professional.

Sergeant Derek MacFarlane
Sergeant MacFarlane has been a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service since 1999. During his career he has served the community in various capacities including; Patrol Services, Emergency Services Unit, as a Detective in Investigation Services in the Drug Enforcement Unit, working numerous Joint Forces Operations, Intelligence and a supervisor of the Intimate Partner Violence and Sex Offender Unit.
In 2022, Derek took over Uniform Recruitment. In this role he is actively looking for qualified candidates to fill vacancies as Police Constables, Special Constables and Auxiliary Constables.
He is a graduate of the Sault College Law and Security program and also received a degree in Criminal Justice from Lake Superior State University. He is a recipient of the 20 year Police Exemplary Service Medal.
Jamie Appleton
In January 2018, Jamie Appleton retired as a constable with Ontario Provincial Police after 30 years of service.
During his career, he worked in General Law Enforcement, Provincial Search and Rescue Coordinator, Court Services, and was a 26 year member of the Provincial Emergency Response Team. During his tenure with the OPP, Jamie was an active background investigator.
In December of 2018, Jamie joined the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and presently works as a civilian with Uniform Recruitment and Human Resources conducting background investigations for civilian and sworn members.
Brian Speakman
Brian began his career with the Sault Ste Marie Police Service in October 2022.
Brian retired after 37 years with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), where he held various positions. Along with serving across the province as a front-line Constable, he spent time as a Crisis Negotiator, Provincial Liaison Team Member and Tactical Flight Officer with Aviation Services.
Upon his retirement, he was Operations Manager at the Sault Ste. Marie OPP detachment.
Brian is now a civilian Part-Time Background Investigator/Recruiter at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service where he conducts background investigations for civilian and sworn members.
In his leisure time he enjoys playing hockey, skiing, golf, reading and spending time with his wife and travelling to see their children and grandchildren.
Jody Greco
In January 2023, Jody retired as an Inspector at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service after more than 30 years of service.
Most of his career was spent in investigative roles, including time with the Drug Enforcement Unit and as a liaison with the Criminal Intelligence of Ontario. As an Inspector, Jody lead Investigation Services for several years before serving as the Inspector of Patrol Services.
In his time at our service, Jody had perfect attendance for 25 years and was awarded his fit pin for 17 years. He also received a board commendation in recognition of his work on patrol.
Jody rejoined the Sault Police team shortly after his retirement as a civilian Part-Time Background Investigator/Recruiter.
Tom Armstrong
In December 2023, Tom retired as a Staff Sergeant at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service after more than 25 years of service.
During his career, Tom worked in Patrol Services, Investigation Services, and in the Professional Standards Bureau.
Tom rejoined the Sault Police team in September 2024 as a civilian Part-Time Background Investigator/Recruiter
Emily Coccimiglio
In October 2024, Emily retired as a Constable at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service after 23 years of service.
Throughout her career, Emily served on the Street Team, Investigation Services, Patrol Services, and the Community Mobilization Unit, where she touched countless lives and earned numerous commendations for her exemplary work.
Emily rejoined the Sault Police team shortly after retiring. She is now a civilian Part-Time Background Investigator/Recruiter.
Outside of work, Emily enjoys camping and watching her daughter play soccer.
Alison Kirkpatrick
In January 2022, Alison retired as a Constable after 28 years of service with Sault Police.
Before joining the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service in 1994, Alison served with the Stratford Police Service for two years.
During her time at our service, Alison became well known in the community because of her work as a Community Safety Officer, High School Liaison Officer, and her time spent with Sault Ste. Marie & Algoma Crime Stoppers. She also spent time in Patrol Services and Investigation Services, specifically Fraud and Elder Abuse investigations and earned numerous commendations for her work.
Alison rejoined the Sault Police team in September 2024 as a civilian Part-Time Background Investigator/Recruiter.
