Try Out the Sault Police Fitness Test

Approved by: 263 - March 3, 2025

Are you fit enough to be an Auxiliary Constable, Special Constable, or Recruit Constable? Sault Police are giving you the chance to find out.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) is offering four fitness test practice sessions this May for those who are interested in a career in policing. Sessions are taking place on Friday, May 2, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Capacity is limited to 20 participants per session. There will be a waitlist of five additional registrants per session in case of cancellations.

“The fitness test can seem intimidating, but this is a great opportunity to assess your current fitness level in a supportive and encouraging environment,” says Derek MacFarlane, Sergeant of Uniform Recruitment. “It’s a chance to try the test without the pressure of the real thing and see where you may need improvement.”

Passing the fitness test is a requirement for those applying to be a Constable, Special Constable, or Auxiliary Constable. While the sessions are intended to be for learning and practice, those who pass the practice test may choose to use the results in their application to SSMPS for up to four months. Those who do not pass will receive constructive feedback on how to improve their fitness.

The fitness test practice sessions are part of SSMPS’s broader recruitment strategy. In addition to hiring paid positions, the service is currently recruiting six new Auxiliary Constables. The Auxiliary Unit is made up of dedicated volunteers who support the police service in many ways, such as assisting with events, training scenarios, and community engagement.
