May is Bicycle Safety Month
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service recognizes May as Bicycle Safety Month.
“As the weather gets nicer, we can expect to see more folks out and about on bicycles,” says Joe Poderys, Traffic Sergeant. “Not only is it important for cyclists to follow the rules and take precautions to keep themselves safe, but motorists, too, need to be mindful of sharing the road with cyclists.”
Throughout the month, Sault Police will be sharing bicycle safety tips on social media. This initiative aims to promote bicycle safety awareness and encourage responsible cycling practices among residents of all ages.
Safety Tips for Cyclists:
• Wear a Helmet: Protect your head; helmets dramatically reduce the risk of head injuries.
• Check Your Bike: Before riding, ensure your bicycle is in good working condition with properly inflated tires, functioning brakes, and visible reflectors.
• Be Visible: Use lights and wear reflective clothing, especially when cycling in low-light conditions.
• Follow Traffic Rules: Obey all traffic signs and signals. Ride in the direction of traffic and use hand signals to communicate with drivers and other cyclists.
• Stay Alert: Always be aware of your surroundings and watch for road hazards like potholes, puddles, and debris.
Ontario Laws for Cyclists:
• Bicycles on the roadway are considered vehicles under Ontario law.
• Cyclists are required to stop at all red lights and stop signs and comply with all traffic control signals.
• The use of a proper light and reflectors is mandatory when riding a half-hour before sunset and a half-hour after sunrise.
• Helmets are mandatory for cyclists under the age of 18 and are highly recommended for all cyclists.
If you live in Sault Ste. Marie or Prince Township, Sault Police also recommend registering your bicycle at https://saultpolice.ca/bikeregistry. If your bicycle gets stolen, having it registered increases the odds of having it returned to you.
