Fitness Test Practice Sessions
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (SSMPS) will be holding four fitness test practice sessions at Sault College for those who are interested in a career in policing (i.e. successful completion of the fitness test is required for Auxiliary Constables, Special Constables, and Recruit Constables).
Sessions will be approximately 3-4 hours and will take place on the following dates/times:
- Friday, May 2, 2025 at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
- Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
If you are interested in attending, please thoroughly read all of the information on this page before filling out the registration form at the bottom of this page.
The registration deadline is Friday, April 11, 2025, at 3:00 p.m.
Background Check
You will be required to consent to a basic background check. Factors that will come up in a background check and may disqualify you from participating include (but are not limited to): recent police involvement, intimate partner (domestic) violence, criminal charges, affiliation with criminal activity, etc.
Session Capacity & Attendance
The form will allow 25 individuals to register; however, only the first 20 approved will be able to attend. The remaining 5 slots will serve as a wait list in case of cancellations.
Please only register if you are certain you will be able to attend on your chosen date and time as capacity is limited to 20 people per session.
If you register and do not show up for your session without a valid reason, you will be ineligible for participation in future sessions. Your missed session will also be kept on file and referenced in any future job applications with SSMPS.
What to Expect Next
Filling out the registration form does not guarantee your registration will be approved. Registration is on a first come, first served basis.
- If your registration is approved by Uniform Recruitment, you will be sent a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire to complete prior to the session to ensure it is safe for you to participate.
- Factors that may impact your ability to participate are elevated heart rate, blood pressure, and/or injury.
- If you are approved but are on the wait list, you will be informed accordingly.
- If your registration is not approved, you will be informed accordingly. Only those whose registration has been approved will be permitted to participate.
Those who show up without registering and receiving approval will not be permitted entry into the session.
Test Results
While these sessions are intended to be for learning and practice, those who pass the practice test may choose to use the results as part of their application to SSMPS for up to four months.
Those who do not pass the test will not be penalized (i.e. will not have the mandatory 3-month wait period to reapply that normally follows an unsuccessful test). SSMPS Fitness Appraisers will provide one-on-one feedback after the session on areas for improvement and advice on how to improve.
How to Prepare
The police fitness test is not easy and requires a high level of physical fitness in order to achieve the 75% score needed to pass.
For more information on the police fitness test requirements and scoring, click here.
Please note that you will need to have engaged in physical activity that elevates your heart rate to at least 90% of your estimated maximum in the 30 days leading up to the fitness test practice session in order to participate. If you don't, you will not be allowed to participate. This is for your safety as we need to be sure your heart can handle the stress of the test.
- Examples of physical activity which could elevate your heart rate to this level include running/sprinting, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), competitive sports, etc.
- Examples of your body's response to elevating your heart rate to this level include rapid breathing, strong/fast heartbeat, feelings of exhaustion, sweating, etc.
