Chief of Police

Position: Chief of Police (Sault Ste. Marie Police Service)
Location: Sault Ste. Marie, ON

From its humble beginnings in 1871, the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has grown into a modern and progressive organization committed to the continued refinement of it’s community policing service delivery model.  Consisting of 226 full-time members (sworn and civilian), the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service utilizes it’s $40 million budget to deliver proactive, intelligence-led police services to approximately 75,000 citizens of Sault Ste. Marie and approximately 975 citizens of Prince Township, nestled in the heart of the Great Lakes, equal distance between Toronto and Thunder Bay.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Services Board is seeking a seasoned, strategic and inspirational law enforcement executive to serve as its next Chief.

As Chief, your first priority will be to develop an appreciation for the unique cultural and stakeholder diversity of the communities of Sault Ste. Marie and Prince Township and continue to enhance ties with the community based on trust, transparency and a true sense of partnership.

Collaborative, inclusive and a true team player, your leadership will engender confidence and a commitment to proactivity and performance excellence as you mentor and empower the Service’s next generation of leaders.

Your outstanding administrative and transformational leadership skills will be crucial as the Service continues to find creative ways to optimize and address the many fiscal and operational challenges faced by police organizations today.

Your ability to encourage dialogue, negotiate and build consensus will be key in successfully managing complex issues and relationships, both internally and externally.

Perhaps most importantly, you can supply a clarity of vision on the Service’s future state and rally people around that vision in a way that reinforces the sense of pride that comes from a shared commitment to the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.

To apply for this position, please submit your resume, cover letter and related materials to l.hodgson@ssmps.org and state the title of the position in the subject line of your email.

Applications must be received by May 16, 2025.  All selected applicants will be subject to a comprehensive background check.
