Each Monday, we introduce you to a different member of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. This will include officers and civilian members, including Special Constables. You will learn a little about our members as people, how they became members of Sault Police, and the roles they play in keeping our community safe.

Joe, a Detective Staff Sergeant in Investigation Services, joined the Sault Police in December 2002.

Born and raised in the Sault, Joe earned his diploma in Law and Security from Sault College. Initially, he worked as an apprentice crane operator, laying natural gas pipelines across the province. Joe then became a custodial engineer at the Police Services Building—a position he stayed in for ten years before realizing he “would rather work as a police officer than clean toilets.” Once he became an officer, Joe worked in Patrol Services for several years, including three years as a seasonal full-time snow mobile enforcement officer.

In 2010, Joe began working as a detective in the Criminal Investigations Division (now called Investigation Services). Having worked most major cases since 2011, he says his favourite part of the job is “having the satisfaction of finding out the truth about what took place.”

Throughout his career, Joe has been recognized with two Chief’s Coins: one for his pivotal role in a homicide investigation and another for leading Project Eraser, an initiative targeting downtown graffiti. Recently, he became a trainer for Front Line Supervisors and Criminal Investigative Techniques.

Outside of work, Joe enjoys spending time with his wife, kids, and grandkids. He particularly likes attending classic car events around Ontario and Michigan.

Fun fact: Joe raced stock cars for 15 years and earned the nickname “the Racing Constable”!
