Uniform Recruitment

The Uniform Recruitment division is responsible for recruiting, interviewing and conducting background investigations for everyone who applies to become a sworn officer of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. That includes Experienced Officers, Recruit Constables, Special Constables and Auxiliary Members. Uniform Recruitment is supported by Human Resources, including the part-time Background Investigators.

Uniform Recruitment is proactively looking for professional and motivated individuals who are eager to join our team as an Experienced Officer, Recruit Constable, Special Constable or an Auxiliary Member.

Uniform Recruitment works alongside Human Resources to review all applications to ensure applicants meet the criteria necessary to become a sworn officer with our Service. Uniform Recruitment conducts interviews with applicants, completes background investigations and liaises with psychologists and medical doctors to ensure the application process is efficient and professional.

Sergeant Derek MacFarlane

Sergeant Derek MacFarlane

Sergeant MacFarlane has been a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service since 1999. During his career he has served the community in various capacities including; Patrol Services, Emergency Services Unit, as a Detective in Investigation Services in the Drug Enforcement Unit, working numerous Joint Forces Operations, Intelligence and a supervisor of the Intimate Partner Violence and Sex Offender Unit.

In 2022, Derek took over Uniform Recruitment. In this role he is actively looking for qualified candidates to fill vacancies as Police Constables, Special Constables and Auxiliary Constables.

He is a graduate of the Sault College Law and Security program and also received a degree in Criminal Justice from Lake Superior State University. He is a recipient of the 20 year Police Exemplary Service Medal.

Background Investigator

Jamie Appleton

In January 2018, Jamie Appleton retired as a constable with Ontario Provincial Police after 30 years of service.

During his career, he worked in General Law Enforcement, 26 year member of the Provincial Emergency Response Team, Provincial Search and Rescue Coordinator and Court Services. During his tenure with the OPP, Jamie was an active background investigator.

In December of 2018, Jamie joined the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service and presently works with Uniform Recruitment and Human Resources conducting background investigations for civilian and sworn members.

Brian Speakman

Brian Speakman

Brian began his career with the Sault Ste Marie Police Service in October 2022. Recently retired after 37 years with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) he held various positions in that organization. Along with serving across the province as a front-line Constable, he spent time as a Crisis Negotiator, Provincial Liaison Team Member and Tactical Flight Officer with Aviation Services.

Upon his retirement he was Operations Manager at the Sault Ste Marie OPP detachment.

With the Sault Police Brian will work with the Uniform Recruitment and Human Resources teams recruiting civilian and sworn members and conducting background investigations.

In his leisure time he enjoys playing hockey, skiing, golf, reading and spending time with his wife and travelling to see their children and grandchildren.
