Algoma University Partnership

As a service, ongoing education is fundamental for our sworn and civilian members to stay up to date with changes in legislation and best police practices. Algoma University has proven to be an important ally in this regard.

The relationship with the university blossomed in 2018 as we collaboratively worked to establish a new teaching model to bridge the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities. Obviously, for us, much of that revolves around police interaction. The Shifting Indigenous Frontline Tactics program, or SHIFT, is now part of our regular training plan. It is our goal to have everyone, from Senior Command down, participate in SHIFT training to foster an environment of greater cultural understanding and sensitivity towards Indigenous peoples and communities.

Our partnership with Algoma University continues to grow. Our Training Services Unit is now located on the Algoma University campus, where we are running in-service training. Being in an academic setting is beneficial on a number of levels. First and foremost, it allows our members to focus on learning the material provided. We are also utilizing workout studios for our defensive tactics training. Having a presence on campus also allows us to interact with students and establish a positive relationship with members of the community.
