Halloween Safety

Approved by: 1030 - October 31, 2023

Halloween is here, and the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service wants your trick-or-treaters to have a fa-boo-lous evening by keeping safety top of mind. Here are some fang-tastic safety tips that will ensure a skele-fun time:

Costume Safety

  • Fasten reflective tape or glow sticks to costumes and bags and/or bring a flashlight to help drivers see you
  • Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls

Trick-or-Treating Safety

  • Don’t venture out alone – go with a group or trusted adult
  • Walk, don’t run
  • Look both ways before crossing the street
  • Use crosswalks wherever possible
  • Use sidewalks whenever possible (if there is no sidewalk, walk on the left-hand side of the street facing traffic)
  • Eat only factory-wrapped treats; don’t eat homemade treats made by strangers
  • Only visit well-lit houses; don’t stop at dark houses
  • Don’t enter a stranger’s home or vehicle
  • Avoid animals you don’t know
  • Carry emergency contact information

Driver’s Tips:

  • Expect increased foot traffic – drive slowly and cautiously
  • Enter and exit driveways slowly
  • Take extra care at intersections
  • Indulging in boos? DON’T drink and drive

Happy Halloween from Sault Police!
